If I am God’s purpose, what is my purpose, my reason for being? I am here to glorify God. He created me as His expression, that is why it is so important for me to walk in His footsteps as Jesus did. God leads the way; I need only to listen for His instructions. They do not only come to my thought in words but in instincts, intuition, feelings, etc. This is how he communicates with all of us. I learned how important it was to trust these messages when they came.
I am learning to resist the temptation to pay attention to the material sense evidence because I do not always understand God’s message. I need to trust Him.
I am going to give you an illustration that I used in my Sunday School class years ago. You are in your car headed straight for a large pole when you get a message not to turn away from the pole. Now, does that make any sense at all? Not according to material sense, but God knows something we do not know. So, you listen to material sense evidence and turn away from the pole, and the pole falls on your car. Had you gone straight, it would have fallen out of your way. Trust God; he will not lead you astray.
I am not saying it’s easy. Sometimes the evidence is pretty alarming. I tested the messages in small ways at first until I began to see they were always right. How many times, when you were about to do something, did you get a thought to do it differently, and then wanted to kick yourself later for not listening. That used to happen to me all the time. Now I listen. I now know they are God’s “angel messages.”
ANGELS. God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality. (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Page 581:4 by Mary Baker Eddy)
ANGELS
When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Oh, may you feel this touch, — it is not the clasping of hands, nor a loved person present; it is more than this: it is a spiritual idea that lights your path! The Psalmist saith: “He shall give His angels charge over thee.” God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for to-morrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment. What a glorious inheritance is given to us through the understanding of omnipresent Love! More we cannot ask: more we do not want: more we cannot have. This sweet assurance is the “Peace, be still” to all human fears, to suffering of every sort. (Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896 Page. 306:22–10 by Mary Baker Eddy)
My purpose, and yours, is to listen to and trust God’s angel messages.
Remember the story of Manna in the wilderness. God told Moses that the Children of Israel were only to gather what they needed for the day. Some gathered more fearing they would not get more the next day, but it spoiled overnight. But every morning, their needs were met. Jesus said, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” (Matt. 6:34) “And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited;” (Ex. 16:35)
Also, another story in Luke 12:15-21 about the man who had abundance one year and built new barns to hoard it away for his future, for all the wrong reasons, and died the next day. “But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12: 20, 21)
If we are blessed with an abundance, do not hoard it away for the wrong reasons, use it wisely. This does not mean I should not save for the future, but it is not necessary to worry or overdo. I need to take care of my NOW first, but not overdo that either. Jesus also said, “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?” (Matt. 6:31) I believe he is telling us these are not the important things in our life. Not that we do not need them, as he ate, drank, and was clothed, just do not make them important. I learned to trust that I will have the means and opportunity to provide these things for my daughter and myself. We have never gone without, even though when I was raising her, we existed on a poverty income. Things have changed since then. 😊
I love what Mrs. Eddy wrote above, “Never ask for to-morrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment.” That has been proved to me so many times. When I need something, I get it, and I never give it much thought. I live a simple, quiet life. When my mother passed, five years ago, she left me the villa in a trust, so I have a nice place to live, Thank you, Mom. I dress inexpensive but nice. Thirty years ago, when I was able to afford to purchase my own car, I bought a new car every ten years. I take good care of my cars, so when I trade them in, they are still like new. I don’t buy anything unless I can pay for it, or I can get it at zero interest and afford the payments.
God’s only purpose is to be there for us every moment. Our purpose is to be Godlike to reflect all His divine qualities. Jesus never worried or fret over things, and neither should we. I used to worry and fret over everything, but now I don’t even remember what it feels like to worry. God’s angel messages (the still small voice, and more) help me through every aspect of my life.
As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. (Ps. 18:30,32)
